It was originally called "Emancipation Day" and it celebrates when slaves in Galveston, Texas were told that they were free by General Gordon Granger on June 19th, 1865 - two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued and two months after the surrender of Robert E. Lee, which effectively ended the Civil War.
